Accounting is said to be the language of business. Regardless of whether you are a decision-maker within a business, a new manager, or are looking to move up in your organization, this course will help you understand financial information. If you've been out of school for a while and are looking to try a university business course, this may be for you.

What is it?

Introductory Financial Accounting is a free MOOC. It is divided into five modules. You will learn about the accounting cycle, how to analyze and record financial transactions, and how to report those financial transactions in financial statements. We will focus on accounting for corporations but will also touch on accounting for sole proprietorships and partnerships. You will learn how to interpret financial statements using ratio analysis and the basic technical skills needed for financial accounting.

Why should I take this course?

The MOOC includes interactive learning activities like auto-graded explorations and labs for each chapter section. There are also auto-graded quizzes at the end of each module. All of these are made available to you as you progress through the course. It allows you to learn the concepts, test them out in a safe learning environment, and is a free way that lets you start learning the basics of financial information. An AU Faculty of Business Instructor moderates module forums and FAQs.

Why is this course important?

When you finish the MOOC, you will have the skills, knowledge, and critical thinking abilities to prepare and analyze a set of basic financial statements—an important skill set in today’s economy.
