Manitoba RN Prescribing

Overview

The Manitoba RN Prescribing online course was developed to prepare registered nurse authorized prescribers, RN(AP)s, to work in jurisdictions where they make and communicate a diagnosis, prescribe certain medications and vaccines, fit certain medical devices, and order specific diagnostic or screening tests.

Module 1: Competencies, Requirements, and Standards (online self-paced)

A certificate of completion is awarded when you have successfully completed the course exams, and assignments for this module and for Module 2.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Structure and cost

This is module is online; learning is self-paced. There are 5 units, and you have 6 months to complete the course.

Each unit includes learning activities, readings, and reflective exercises.

Each unit contains a short quiz designed to reinforce critical knowledge. You may take these short quizzes as many times as you wish.

There is one final exam.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of Module 1, you will be able to:

  • articulate the professional nursing obligations relevant to prescribing medications or ordering of tests
  • understand the legal and regulatory limits on RN prescriptive authority in Manitoba
  • advance your professional ethos, and understanding of accountability, pertinent to RN prescribing practice
  • ensure client safety and comprehensive care through communication, consultation and collaboration with other health care professionals and individual clients
  • discuss the need for maintaining currency and competence in your area of RN prescribing practice to best meet the needs of your clients and the health care system
  • compose a complete and legal prescription

Module 2: Knowledge-Based Practice – Prescribing Medications and Ordering Diagnostic Tests

Topics

Manitoba RN Prescribing Module 2: Knowledge-Based Practice addresses knowledge-based competencies for prescribing in these domains:

  • pharmacologic principles
  • pathophysiology
  • client assessment
  • client safety
  • pharmacotherapeutics
  • side effects and contraindications
  • diagnostic testing and interpretation
  • consultation, documentation, follow-up and referral

Prerequisites

Module 1: Competencies, Requirements and Standards must be completed prior to, or taken concurrently with, this module.

Structure and cost

This module is online and paced—10 units over 13 weeks. The module begins on the first Wednesday of May, September, and January.

Each unit includes learning activities, readings, and reflective exercises.

Please register 2 months before the next available start date. A minimum of 10 registrants is required for the module to be offered.

You will participate in unit conferences and videoconferencing sessions to discuss unit content and related issues. Except for the videoconferencing sessions, you complete the course work at times of your choosing during each week. That is, there is no structured class time.

You will complete two case studies and a final exam.

When you finish both modules in the Manitoba RN Prescribing course:

  • you will be invited to complete the course evaluation, which will inform future revisions
  • please download and save a copy of your certificate of completion. If you are applying to Red River College, you can submit this certificate with your application.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of Module 2, you will be able to:

  • articulate the professional nursing obligations relevant to prescribing medications or ordering of tests
  • utilize the principles of pharmacology when prescribing
  • integrate diagnostic reasoning with the nursing process when prescribing medications
  • identify strategies to minimize risk to the patient using rational drug selection principles
  • articulate strategies to encourage adherence to the plan of care
  • document and provide appropriate follow-up in relation to the prescribing of medications
  • evaluate the need for testing or imaging using critical thinking and clinical reasoning
  • outline the responsibilities associated with ordering tests of any kind
  • interpret basic tests including liver and kidney function
  • consult with the appropriate team member in the case of abnormal test results
  • accurately document and follow-up any tests or imaging that you have ordered

Course Goals

The Manitoba RN(AP) Prescribing course builds on basic foundational knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and patient assessment acquired as a registered nurse.

Successful completion of the course prepares RNs to meet CRNM’s requirements for prescribing drugs and ordering diagnostic tests.

A certificate of completion is awarded when you have successfully completed the course exams, and assignments for assignments for both course modules.
